CRC COVID study: A study of colorectal cancer services during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought some difficult challenges for colorectal cancer diagnosis and treatment. We are caring for patients within an environment that carries the risk to patients and staff of transmitting the corona virus. Our capacity for detecting patients with colorectal cancer and offering them surgery at the right time is reduced due to hospital resources being used for patients suffering from COVID-19. We are keen to learn how well we are delivering cancer services and how to plan for the future.

What is the purpose of the study?

This study aims to evaluate the quality of cancer service delivery during the pandemic. This will be investigated in the UK and the United States. We will assess what modifications have been made nationally and internationally to deliver safe cancer care and we will estimate the costs of these modifications in order to plan for future patients.

How will this study be conducted?

We will be asking cancer units across the UK and in the United States questions about how they are delivering services during the pandemic, and how they have adjusted their processes. We will be assessing the effect of these changes on cancer outcomes.

Will patient details be used?

All information that is collected about patient outcomes is strictly confidential. Any information stored and analysed has all patient identification markers removed and data is anonymised so that patients cannot be recognised.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

The results collected in this study will be analysed and the findings of the study will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. If you would like to be notified about the publication date and journal, please contact a member of the team, who will be able to assist you further (see below).

Who is organising the research?

Imperial College London and Johns Hopkins University is organising this research project.
